Many junior doctors cannot understand the exact differences between MRCP Part1 and Part2 exams. Because both exams are the single best MCQ-based written exams. The syllabus for both exams overlaps to a great extent. But in reality, both exams are measuring completely different skillset.
MRCP Part 1
The MRCP(UK) Part 1 is the entry-level exam for doctors who have been working in medicine for at least 12 months after they graduated. It covers a wide range of topics to make sure that doctors at the start of their postgraduate training know enough about them.
The MRCP(UK) Part 1 exam is meant to test a candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the clinical sciences relevant to medical practice and of common or important diseases to a level that is good enough for entry into specialist training. Clinical reasoning needs to be based on knowledge, which is also important for learning during postgraduate training to understand diseases and how to treat them.
MRCP Part 2
Anyone who has passed the MRCP(UK) Part 1 written exam can take the MRCP(UK) Part 2 written exam. It builds on the knowledge assessed in Part 1 and tests the acquisition of a representative sample of medical knowledge, skills, and behavior as specified in the UK Specialty Training Curriculum for Core Medical Training / Curriculum for Internal Medicine.
