Junior doctor income rise
In many developed countries, junior doctors get a handsome salary. But in contrast, the life of a junior doctor in a developing country is not so easy. It’s not always guaranteed to start a residency program very soon. Even if they were selected for a residency program, the earning potential of junior doctors remains low until they complete a specialization degree and get a job in a renowned hospital. Many of them start to earn a handsome amount in their 40s. In their 30s many of them feel somewhat insecure and depressed about their future life due to low income compared to other comparable professions. If you are from a developed nation, you must be wondering by now! But trust me, In some of the developing countries junior doctors earn significantly less than Uber drivers!
To overcome this problem, junior doctors need alternative income sources that would not hamper their careers while at the same time offer them a secure life.
The characteristics of ideal alternative income sources for a doctor
The ideal income source for a medical doctor should not hamper his/ her studies too much.
It should be in line with medical science so that a young doctor can learn something important while earning.Â
It should be accepted by society.
It should be legal.
The potential income sources
Here I would discuss some of the potential alternative income sources for junior doctors in low-income countries. If would like to add other potential income sources then please write in the comment section.
1. YouTubing
Everybody can start a YouTube channel. A junior doctor can share medical-related content with medical students and general people using his/her channel. There are many well-known successful medical YouTubers! Some of my favorite medical YouTubers are:Â
If you want to start earning on YouTube you must have at least 4000 hours of combined video watch time on your videos and 1000 subscribers. Then you will be eligible to start an AdSense account to earn money. A medical YouTuber can expect to earn between $2 to $5 per thousand video views depending on many factors. Creating a medical video for YouTube is fun. It also provides a lot of learning opportunities for the video creator. We also have a YouTube channel named Costamedic. 2. Medical Blogging
You can start your own medical blog site! You can share medical information and tips & tricks on your blog. You can upload audio, video, medical graphics, etc. to your blog to attract readers. All you need to start a blog is to buy a domain name and hosting package. Then you can build your blog site using WordPress or other site builders.Â
- Once you have more than 100 blog readers per day then you can start monetization of your blog through AdSense or AdSense alternatives. They will put relevant advertisements on your blog. The income is generated when someone views or clicks on the ads.Â
- Your medical-related products, course contents, and services can be sold or distributed through the blog.
- You can attract other bloggers for guest posts.
- Different affiliate marketing programs can be integrated to your medical blog.
The earning potential for medical bloggers depends on many factors e.g. number of readers, number of products and services, number of customers, etc.
3. Medical illustration
If you are good at drawing then you can easily learn digital art. It’s not rocket science! You can download Autodesk Sketchbook for free and start drawing. I recommend you to buy a Wacom device also. You can practice digital art in your leisure time. There are plenty of video tutorials on YouTube to help you start with digital art. The learning curve is not very stiff, trust me! Once you have mastered digital art you can start creating medical illustrations. You can sell your illustrations through your blog or social media profiles.Â

4. Telehealth
It may not be applicable to all countries. But in some countries, junior doctors can start their own telehealth platform or join an existing platform to earn money. While telehealth is not an alternative to traditional medical practice but it can be quite helpful in certain circumstances. You can google search for a telehealth platform in your country and join.
5. Join a Freelancing Marketplace
Some of the popular freelancing marketplaces are Fiverr, Freelancer, and Upwork, etc. Many medical-related services e.g. medical blog writing, medical question and answer writing, medical illustrations, medical infographics, medical voiceover, etc. can be sold through these platforms. The demand for freelancing works has been increased due to COVID 19 outbreak. Many of the traditional services are closed now. Buyers from all over the world are searching for freelancers to do their projects.
